What is Dia de los Muertos?

Dia de los Muertos means Day of the Dead and takes place over multiple days, from October 31st to November 2nd. The holiday is Mexican in origin and is celebrated in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage everywhere. On this holiday people remember and celebrate those that have died and help their spirits in their journey. People consider this a day of celebration, not of sadness. The origins of the holiday can be traced back hundreds of years to an Aztec festival. Nowadays the holiday is often associated with Halloween in English-speaking countries. As a way of honoring the dead, people also often build altars (ofrendas) with photos and memorabilia and provide offerings to those that have passed in the form of their favorite foods and beverages.
